Small businesses prefer to remain in the EU

Small businesses are the backbone of the UK economy. To make your voices heard, we ask your views on key topics each quarter, and share your answers with journalists and policy makers.

As negotiations between the UK and the EU reach a critical point, we asked small business owners how you would vote if the referendum was held today. More than half (56%) said you would vote to remain, a 7% increase since April 2017.

Even if those of you who are currently undecided or would rather not say voted leave in a referendum held today this would bring the total to 43%, giving ‘remain’ a clear majority.

In addition, 56% of you believe that the people of the UK should be offered a vote on the final deal that establishes Britain’s future relationship with the EU.

When we asked for your thoughts on the details of this future relationship, 45% told us that continued participation in both or either the Customs Union and Single Market was important to your business. Only 7% believed your business would benefit from no longer participating in either.
